Water
peeps out from behind the reeds, revealing a liquid
face that could break into tears or laughter at any
                        second.
Water is the first of a planned four-part
series called Elements. The series will
consist of smaller pieces such as the one shown,
corresponding to the four classic elements of fire,
                        earth, air and water .
The four elements date back to Empedocles, (ca.
495-435 B.C) who claimed that they combined in
various ways to make all matter. While modern physics
has replaced Empedocles ideas as an explanation of
matter, the idea of the four elements had a profound
and lasting effect on Western civilization and are
passed on to us today in the traditions of music,
                        astrology, and the Bible.
